How to Secure your Home when you are on Holiday:
A summer holiday is a happy and exciting time, especially for families. But while the kids are having fun in the sun, Mum and Dad can often be worrying about the home they’ve left behind. For peace of mind, follow some simple steps before you leave:
- Lock Up:
This may sound obvious, but make sure that you check all windows and doors, including any garages, outbuildings and gates.
- Alarms:
Make sure you have set your security alarm, and if it is a monitored alarm ensure that the monitoring station and the key holder are aware of each other.
- Cancel Deliveries:
Cancel milk, papers, vegetable boxes etc. If you are doing this in person, say in the newsagent or greengrocer then ensure you are discreet! You don’t want the whole shop to know you’re going to be away.
- Put Valuables Out of Sight:
Don’t leave laptops or other expensive items in view of the windows.
- Make the House Look Occupied:
Invest in some timer switches for lights, radios etc. Or if you have very kind neighbours you could ask them to open and draw curtains, as well as turning lights on and off
- Sort Your Post:
If you don’t have neighbours to move your post from behind the door, you can always ask Royal Mail to keep hold of it via their Keep Safe service.
Summer Security Tips for Businesses:
Summer brings security challenges for businesses; not all involving closing for a summer break. Here are some tips to help protect your business at this time of year:
- Make Sure all Windows and Doors are Closed and Locked:
This may sound obvious, but staff leaving a window or door open or unlocked when rushing off after a busy shift is a major security risk. Ensure all your staff are vigilant, and have an end of day security checklist that must be followed.
- Test Before Closing:
If you are closing for a week or two for a summer break, which many small businesses do, check your security systems before you leave. A week before shutting down, check the CCTV and alarm system. This leaves you time to rectify any issues before the break.
- Protect Valuable Documents and Equipment:
With warmer weather, there are a lot more people on the streets, so you may find more people lingering near your business, with a risk of anti social behaviour. It is worth putting extra CCTV near valuable documents, equipment or products (if you have a shop). You may even want to look into mobile patrol or static guarding.
- Be Aware of Local Events:
Summer tends to bring more fun events to the area, which is great for the community. However the extra footfall around your business may mean you want to ramp up security during certain weekends. Keep up to date with these events, and if you have concerns you can contact All Security for a temporary static guard.
